NR-1, short for Neuralese Reasoning 1, is Cymela's own latent reasoning framework, for building and testing a language model designed to take a few internal steps before it writes an answer, rather than writing its reasoning out as text. Monarch Chrysalis 1 was trained under NR-1. It is an early research framework, and most of what it asks is still being measured.
NR-1 covers three things together: the shape of the model's internal steps, how the model is trained to use them, and how we test whether it actually does. After reading a prompt, the model takes a few internal steps that are never written out as words, and then writes its answer.
Neuralese is the general idea of reasoning in vectors instead of words, and Cymela's line of research in latent reasoning; NR-1 (Neuralese Reasoning 1) is Cymela's first framework within Neuralese. The 1 is a version: a later revision would be NR-2, and model cards carry the NR version a model was trained under.
Internal steps, up to four. Effort levels that set the most steps the model may take: low takes exactly one, medium up to two, high up to four, and the model can stop before the limit. And a testing side: pass/fail bars written down before the training runs they judge, and measurements during training, such as swapping in another problem's internal steps and checking whether the answer gets worse.
To make latent reasoning something that can be tested rather than assumed. Steps taken as vectors cannot simply be read the way written reasoning can, so the question NR-1 is built around is whether the internal steps carry information that the answer depends on.
Early. In our measurements so far, the internal steps barely change between a problem and the same problem with one number changed. Whether Monarch Chrysalis 1's answers depend on what its internal steps contain is an open question, with its pass/fail bars registered before the measurement.
Trained under NR-1
It does not describe how to reproduce the training (no settings, data or code). It does not claim that Monarch Chrysalis 1 reasons in its internal steps; testing that is what NR-1 is for.
